Far to the north in The Harbinger Mountains stands Mount Riven, once the highest peak in the range. However, great chunks of rocks long ago were blasted away from the mountain to form the hills of Valemark. In the broken places of the mountain the lords of its ancient cities were buried, protected by the cliffs and jagged walls. But the snowmelt came thicker and faster as time wore on and the burial route (along Arrowfell Cliff, the largest cliff on that mountainside) became totally submerged by a growing lake. Eventually, the lake overflowed, cascading over the cliffside and forming what the people of the mountain now call the Cataracts of Arrowfell. The burial route, and the ancient tombs of Hollowrest, were lost, and much of the great civilization of that mountain with them. Now there are few settlements on the mountainside. The best known, Barrow City, lies near the Cataracts, opposite the supposed location of Hollowrest, and apart from being a thriving logging town it is popular with adventurers hoping to acquire some of the ancient treasure for themselves. But none would ever be so foolish as to cross the Cataracts of Arrowfell, as nature – and the mountain’s restless dead – would surely bar the way.
